Aelred Bartlett (1918-2004) - geologist and businessman as well as artist. His company supplied marble for architectural projects, including the marble decorating the interior of Westminster Cathedral in London. It was while Bartlett was sourcing the correct marble in Greece for this project that he became infatuated with a young builder who became the central subject of his paintings. For a number of years he visited Greece regularly on business trips and always spent time with his young friend. He painted him almost obsessively and displayed the pictures in his home in London.
