Howard Capes R.A. (Member of the Royal Academy) was a great friend of the spy Sir Anthony Blunt (Master of the Queen's Pictures) who was outed in the 1970's and fled for safety to Capes' home.  On the reverse of the painting the artists has scratched out his original title "Odd Man Out" and replaced it with "Chech Mate".  Since this is a misspelling we have reverted to the original title.  Also written on the reverse is "Sept '83"
